The Intel Core i5-2520M dual-core processor peaks at 3.2GHz and the 6GB DDR3 configuration provides enough memory for typical single-user workflows without memory pressure. Booting from the 128GB SSD takes under 20 seconds, which dramatically improves the user experience over the original hard drive configuration.
This is a 2011-era machine, and buyers should calibrate expectations accordingly. It handles productivity tasks well but is not suited to modern resource-intensive workloads like compiling large codebases, running virtual machines, or editing high-resolution video. For web browsing, it performs best in a lightweight Linux distribution or with a modern browser in a clean Windows installation — Chrome or Firefox with 10–15 tabs is manageable, though you may notice occasional slowdowns on particularly heavy websites.

Why is no operating system installed?
The Intel Core i5-2520M (2nd Generation) does not meet Microsoft's minimum CPU requirements for Windows 11. Rather than install an outdated Windows version, we supply this unit OS-free so buyers can install their preferred OS — Linux (Ubuntu, Mint, Debian all work excellently), or Windows 10 using their own licence.
What OS should I install?
Ubuntu LTS, Linux Mint, or Debian are excellent choices and have strong ThinkPad T420 compatibility. Linux Mint is particularly recommended for users new to Linux as it closely resembles the Windows interface. Windows 10 also works well with a valid licence — Microsoft extended support runs through October 2025.
Can the RAM be upgraded?
Yes — the T420 has two accessible SO-DIMM slots and supports up to 16GB DDR3. The current 6GB configuration uses a 4GB + 2GB combination. Upgrading to 8GB or 16GB is straightforward and significantly improves multitasking performance.
Does it support an external monitor?
Yes — the T420 has both a DisplayPort and a VGA output. DisplayPort supports up to 2560×1600 on compatible monitors; VGA supports standard resolutions. This makes it easy to connect to a second display at a desk or presentation screen.

Fair tech for price, good specs for era, serves the purpose. The black keyboard is an interesting rubber like texture clearly by design to pad the screen and avoid the keyboard touching. Screen is great. Still looking for magic formula to enable computer use in the bright bright sunshine. Keyboard taps are loud for someone who likes silent touch. The perfect PC has to exist, like build a bear.
The laptop was sold with a warning about worn keycaps. In fact they had been obviously vandalised (ex school laptops, perhaps?). The keyboard worked fine, and the rest of the laptop too. I'm using it as a file server, so I don't need the keyboard much. So very pleased, and also pleased with reboot-it's service - as always, excellent, and quick responses to any queries.
