Q: No OS is installed — what are my options?
A: You can install Windows 10 (supported on this hardware — Windows 11 requires 8th-gen Intel or newer), or any Linux distribution. Ubuntu, Linux Mint, and Debian are popular choices and install easily on the T420. A Windows 10 licence key can be purchased separately from Microsoft or third-party retailers.
Q: Can I upgrade the RAM?
A: Yes. The T420 has two SODIMM slots and supports up to 16GB DDR3 RAM. Upgrading to 8GB is inexpensive and makes a noticeable difference. Standard DDR3 1333 or 1600MHz modules are compatible.
Q: Can I replace the HDD with an SSD?
A: Absolutely — and we recommend it. The 2.5" SATA slot accepts any standard SSD. Replacing the spinning HDD with an SSD is the single biggest upgrade you can make to this machine; boot times and general responsiveness improve dramatically.
Q: What's the story with the battery?
A: All units in this listing have a battery holding less than 60% of its original capacity. This means you'll get a shorter runtime per charge than when the laptop was new — likely 1–2 hours depending on use. For desk use plugged in, this is no issue at all. A replacement battery is widely available online for around $30–$50 AUD if you need longer unplugged runtime. A 30-day battery warranty is included from Reboot IT.

I was looking for an in-expensive all-in-one solution for my home office to replace my existing desktop and monitor. I found this EliteOne 800 on reboot IT for under $200. I wasn't sure what to expect. It arrived within two days!!!! I upgraded the RAM, replaced the HDD and installed Windows 11. This is unbeatable value and was the cheapest price online. Just having trouble greeting it linked to the internet otherwise it’s okay.
Fair tech for price, good specs for era, serves the purpose. The black keyboard is an interesting rubber like texture clearly by design to pad the screen and avoid the keyboard touching. Screen is great. Still looking for magic formula to enable computer use in the bright bright sunshine. Keyboard taps are loud for someone who likes silent touch. The perfect PC has to exist, like build a bear.
The laptop was sold with a warning about worn keycaps. In fact they had been obviously vandalised (ex school laptops, perhaps?). The keyboard worked fine, and the rest of the laptop too. I'm using it as a file server, so I don't need the keyboard much. So very pleased, and also pleased with reboot-it's service - as always, excellent, and quick responses to any queries.
