The 890 series sits in the classic small-branch slot: a single appliance handling the WAN link, the LAN switching, the firewall and the VPN back to head office. For a site of five to thirty users — a regional office, a clinic, a depot, a franchise store — this is usually all the network hardware the location needs. The eight Gigabit LAN ports mean workstations, printers, an access point and a security appliance all land directly on the router.

The VDSL2/ADSL2+ modem is the Annex A (over POTS) variant, which is the configuration used on Australian copper services. That makes the C897VAG a straightforward drop-in where a site is still on a DSL tail, without needing a separate carrier modem in bridge mode. Where the site has moved to a fibre or Ethernet handoff, the Gigabit RJ-45/SFP combo WAN port takes over instead — the same router covers both, which is why these turn up so often in staged NBN migrations.

The 4G LTE side is the differentiator, and it is also the part that needs planning. Configured properly, the cellular interface gives you automatic failover when the fixed line goes down, which is often the whole business case for the model. To use it you will need three things this unit does not include: a pair of SMA cellular antennas, an activated carrier micro-SIM, and confirmation that the router's LTE band support matches your carrier. Treat the LTE radio as a capability you commission, not something that works out of the carton.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this router come with the LTE antennas?

No. This model normally ships with two external SMA antennas for the cellular radio, but this unit is supplied without them. You will need to fit a pair of compatible SMA cellular antennas before the 4G LTE interface will work. The DSL and Ethernet WAN ports are not affected.

Is a SIM card included?

No. The router takes a micro-SIM from your mobile carrier — you supply and activate the data plan. Check with your carrier that its LTE bands are supported by this unit's cellular module before committing to a plan.

Does it have Wi-Fi?

No. On this model "wireless" refers to the 4G LTE cellular WAN, not a Wi-Fi access point. If you need Wi-Fi at the site, add a separate access point on one of the eight Gigabit LAN ports.

Will the DSL modem work on an Australian line?

The DSL interface is the Annex A (over POTS) variant, which is the configuration used on Australian copper DSL services. Where a site has moved to a fibre or Ethernet handoff, use the Gigabit RJ-45/SFP combo WAN port instead.

Is it configured, or does it arrive factory default?

Units are wiped of prior configuration and supplied ready for you to configure. Setting up WAN, VLANs, firewall and VPN policy requires Cisco IOS CLI knowledge or an integrator — we do not provide configuration services.

Is a power supply included?

Yes — the unit is supplied with a power supply and lead. The SFP module for the combo WAN port is not included.
