What is a refurbished device?
A refurbished device is a pre-owned item that has been restored to meet high-quality standards. At Reboot IT, we adhere to strict quality guidelines, ensuring that our refurbished products are not the same as used or secondhand items. We meticulously clean, test, and assess each device, replacing worn parts with high-quality components.
Unlike used items, which lack guarantees and rely solely on the seller's word regarding condition, refurbished devices come with assurance of quality and reliability.

The HPE ProLiant ML30 Gen9 is a single-socket tower server built around a quad-core Xeon E3-1240 v5 with 8 GB of ECC memory and three 480 GB SATA SSDs. iLO 4 remote management and quiet tower operation suit small business and branch office deployment. Backed by a 12-month Reboot IT warranty.
The ML30 Gen9 is HPE's entry tower server, and it is aimed precisely at the business that needs a real server but has no rack and no datacentre. A single-socket Xeon with ECC memory in a quiet tower chassis covers the classic small-business workloads — Active Directory, file and print, accounting or line-of-business databases, backup targets — without the cost and infrastructure of rack hardware.
The E3-1240 v5 is a capable processor for this class. Four cores and eight threads at 3.5 GHz handle a domain controller plus a couple of light application VMs comfortably. Where it runs out of headroom is heavy virtualisation: with a single socket and a 64 GB memory ceiling on this platform, a dozen busy VMs is beyond what it is designed for.
The three SSDs are the part worth planning around. Configured as RAID 5 they give redundancy with usable capacity around 960 GB; as RAID 1 plus a spare, better resilience with less space. Either way the move from spinning disks to SSD is the single largest performance difference an older small-business server can gain, particularly on database and file-server workloads.

✓ Best For: • Small businesses needing a first real server • Branch offices with no rack infrastructure • File, print, domain controller, and backup target roles • Light virtualisation with a small number of VMs • Offices needing quiet operation outside a datacentre |
✗ Not For: • Heavy virtualisation or high VM density • Buyers expecting an operating system or licences included • Rack-mount installations — this is a tower chassis • Workloads needing dual-socket CPU or large memory capacity • Sites requiring iLO Advanced without buying the licence |
| Grade | Cosmetic Condition | Functional Testing |
|---|---|---|
| A — Excellent | Minimal marks, near-new appearance | Boot, POST, processor, memory, all three drives, and iLO verified |
| B — Good | Light wear from normal use, fully functional | Boot, POST, processor, memory, all three drives, and iLO verified |
Does it come with an operating system?
No. The server is supplied without an operating system and without software licensing. Windows Server, Linux, or a hypervisor would need to be installed and licensed separately.
Can the memory be upgraded?
Yes. The ML30 Gen9 uses DDR4 ECC UDIMM memory across four slots. Note that it takes unbuffered ECC memory, not registered (RDIMM) modules.
How should the three SSDs be configured?
That depends on your priority. RAID 5 across all three gives redundancy with roughly 960 GB usable; RAID 1 with a spare gives stronger resilience with less capacity. Configuration is done in the array controller at setup.
Is iLO included?
iLO 4 hardware is built in and provides remote power control and health monitoring. iLO Advanced features such as remote console require a separate HPE licence, which is not included.
Can it be rack mounted?
No. The ML30 Gen9 in this configuration is a tower chassis. Rack conversion kits exist for some ProLiant models but are not supplied here.
Is it noisy enough to be a problem in an office?
The ML30 Gen9 is designed for office placement and is considerably quieter than rack servers, though it is not silent. A comms cupboard or under-desk position suits it well.
