Performance in use

In a small branch office this router does the job of three separate boxes. The WAN port takes your internet handoff, the four-port LAN switch feeds desk sockets or a wireless access point directly, and the IOS firewall sits between them enforcing policy. For a site of five to ten people that is often the entire network edge in a single fanless unit.

The 881 has also earned a long second life as a lab router. Because it runs the same Cisco IOS command set as far larger platforms, it is one of the cheapest ways to build a physical CCNA or CCNP topology — real hardware, real cabling, real console access, rather than a simulator. Two or three of these plus a switch will cover most routing labs.

Be realistic about throughput. The 10/100 interfaces cap this platform at 100 Mbps, and enabling IPsec encryption will reduce usable throughput well below that. On a modern NBN or fibre service the router, not the link, becomes the bottleneck. For a low-bandwidth branch, a management network or a lab bench it is more than adequate; for a fast primary internet service at a busy site it is not the right tool.

Frequently asked questions

Is a power adapter included?

No. As stated in the listing title, this unit ships without a power adapter. The Cisco 881 uses a 12V DC external supply, which you will need to source separately if you do not already have one.

Does this model have Wi-Fi?

No. The C881-K9 is the non-wireless variant. Cisco wireless models carry a W in the part number. You can add a separate access point to one of the LAN ports.

What is the maximum internet speed it will handle?

The interfaces are 10/100, so 100 Mbps is the ceiling before encryption overhead. Enabling IPsec VPN will reduce practical throughput further.

Is it configured, or does it arrive blank?

It arrives factory reset with no prior configuration. You will need console or SSH access and working knowledge of Cisco IOS to set it up.

Can I get Cisco software updates for it?

No. The 881 series has passed the Cisco end-of-support milestones, so new IOS images and TAC support are not available. It ships with the IOS image already installed.

Are console cables or rack ears included?

No. The unit is supplied as the router only unless the title states otherwise.

What warranty is included?

Every unit carries a 12-month warranty from Reboot IT, return to base, covering hardware faults. If it fails within the warranty period we repair or replace it.
