The display

The display is a 14" panel running 1920x1080 — Full HD, which is the resolution most business software is laid out for. Two documents sit side by side legibly, and spreadsheets show a useful number of rows without scaling everything down.

It is a touchscreen, so scrolling, zooming and signing documents work by hand as well as by trackpad. Touch is genuinely useful on a machine you pick up and carry between meetings, and it costs nothing to ignore if you would rather not use it.

Why buy refurbished

Buying refurbished puts a machine that was specified for a corporate fleet within reach at a fraction of its original cost. The alternative at the same money is usually a new consumer laptop built to a much lower standard — thinner plastics, a slower drive, and a warranty that assumes light use.

It is also the environmentally sound choice. The overwhelming majority of a laptop total carbon footprint is incurred during manufacture, not during the years you use it. Extending the working life of a machine that already exists avoids that cost entirely, and keeps a functional computer out of landfill.

There is a practical argument too. Business models are produced in volume and stay in service for years, so spare parts, docking stations, chargers and service manuals are all readily available long after the model has left the shelves. A consumer laptop from the same year is often already orphaned, with no parts supply and no way to have it repaired economically.

Battery and power

Battery is the one component in any used laptop that is genuinely consumable, so it is worth being direct about it. We measure capacity on every unit and grade against it: a Grade A machine holds 70% or more of its original design capacity, and a Grade B machine sits between 50% and 70%.

In practice that means a Grade A unit will comfortably cover a morning of ordinary work away from power, while a Grade B unit is better thought of as a machine that runs on mains with the freedom to move between desks and meetings. Neither will match a brand-new battery, and any seller claiming otherwise on a used machine is guessing.

Batteries carry a 30-day warranty rather than the full 12 months, for the same reason tyres are not covered by a car warranty. If the battery in your unit does not perform as its grade suggests, tell us within that window and we will replace it. Replacement batteries are available for this model if you want a fresh one fitted before dispatch.

How we test and grade

Every machine that comes through our Melbourne workshop is data-wiped, hardware-tested and graded before it is listed. Testing covers the processor, memory, storage health, display, keyboard, trackpad, ports, wireless, camera, audio and battery capacity.

Grading is cosmetic, and we grade conservatively — a unit that could arguably pass as Excellent is listed as Good rather than the other way round. What we will not do is list a machine with a functional fault as merely cosmetically worn.

If something is not right when it arrives, contact us and we will sort it out. That is what the warranty is for, and it is why we have been able to keep trading on repeat business since 2001.
