The 881W was built for the teleworker and small-office slot — a single fanless box that terminates the WAN link, switches four wired devices, serves wireless clients and holds the VPN tunnel back to head office. In a business context that is still a useful shape: a remote worker, a small satellite office, or a site that just needs a hardened managed edge rather than a consumer router. The zone-based firewall and IPsec VPN are the same feature set an integrator would configure on a much larger Cisco platform, which is why these were deployed in fleets and are worth keeping as spares.

Bear in mind the generation. The WAN and LAN ports are 10/100 Fast Ethernet, not Gigabit, and the wireless is single-band 2.4GHz 802.11n. For a site on a 100Mbps or slower service running email, browsing and a VPN tunnel that is entirely adequate — for a modern high-speed NBN or fibre connection it will be the bottleneck. If you need Gigabit throughput or 5GHz wireless, look at a later 890-series or ISR 1000-series unit instead.

Where the 881W really earns its keep now is the lab bench and the spares shelf. Real Cisco IOS on real hardware — console cable, CLI, VLANs, NAT, ACLs, IPsec — is the environment CCNA and CCNP candidates actually get examined on, and this unit delivers it for a fraction of what current kit costs. Do factor in the power supply, which is not included with this unit, and confirm your antenna requirements before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a power adapter included?

No. This unit is supplied without a power adapter. You will need a compatible Cisco 880-series external power supply — get in touch if you would like us to quote one alongside the router.

Are the LAN ports Gigabit?

No. The 881W has a 10/100 Fast Ethernet WAN port and a 4-port 10/100 managed switch. If you need Gigabit throughput, look at a Cisco 890-series or ISR 1000-series unit instead.

What wireless does it support?

The integrated access point is 802.11b/g/n on the 2.4GHz band. There is no 5GHz radio, so it will not deliver 802.11ac or Wi-Fi 6 speeds — it is intended for light office wireless rather than high-density or high-throughput use.

What does the "-A-" in the part number mean?

It is the Americas (FCC) regulatory domain, which restricts the 2.4GHz radio to channels 1–11. Those channels are also valid in Australia, so the access point is usable here, but you will not have access to channels 12 and 13.

Is it configured, or does it arrive factory default?

Units are wiped of prior configuration and supplied ready for you to configure. Setting up WAN, VLANs, wireless, firewall and VPN policy requires Cisco IOS CLI knowledge or an integrator — we do not provide configuration services.

Is it suitable for a CCNA lab?

Yes — this is genuine Cisco IOS hardware with a console port and full CLI, covering routing, NAT, ACLs, VLANs and IPsec. You will need a USB-to-RJ-45 console cable and a power supply, neither of which is included.
