The AMD Ryzen 5 5500U is built on AMD's Zen 2 architecture and delivers meaningful real-world performance well above budget entry-level machines. One important note: this unit has a BIOS administrator password set. This has absolutely no impact on day-to-day Windows use — Windows 11 loads and runs fully, and the machine can boot from a USB drive, PXE network, or the internal SSD as normal. The only restriction is that you cannot enter the BIOS/UEFI setup interface to change firmware settings such as Secure Boot, boot priority, or power options. If your use case requires BIOS-level changes, this unit will not suit your needs.

What exactly does "BIOS locked" mean for this laptop?
A BIOS administrator password has been set on this unit. This means you cannot open the BIOS/UEFI setup menu or change any firmware settings — boot order, Secure Boot, power options, etc. Windows 11 starts and runs completely normally. You can boot from a USB drive, from the internal SSD, or via network (PXE) — all without entering any password. The BIOS lock only applies to accessing the setup menu itself.
Can I reinstall or change the operating system?
Yes. Because the laptop boots from USB and network, you can load a Windows installer or Linux live environment from a USB drive and install a new OS to the SSD. You just cannot change the underlying UEFI configuration (such as disabling Secure Boot) while doing so.
Does the 12-month warranty cover the BIOS lock?
No — the BIOS lock is a disclosed condition of sale, not a hardware defect. The warranty covers hardware faults under normal use: screen, keyboard, battery, motherboard, and SSD. The 30-day battery warranty is also included.
Is 8GB RAM enough for everyday use?
For most everyday tasks — web browsing, email, Microsoft Office, video calls — 8GB is sufficient. If you plan to run virtual machines, large data sets, or demanding creative software, 16GB would be more comfortable.
Can the RAM or SSD be upgraded?
The 256GB SSD is M.2 NVMe and can typically be replaced with a larger drive. RAM on most IdeaPad 5 5500U models is soldered to the motherboard and cannot be upgraded after purchase.

Just having trouble greeting it linked to the internet otherwise it’s okay.
Fair tech for price, good specs for era, serves the purpose. The black keyboard is an interesting rubber like texture clearly by design to pad the screen and avoid the keyboard touching. Screen is great. Still looking for magic formula to enable computer use in the bright bright sunshine. Keyboard taps are loud for someone who likes silent touch. The perfect PC has to exist, like build a bear.
The laptop was sold with a warning about worn keycaps. In fact they had been obviously vandalised (ex school laptops, perhaps?). The keyboard worked fine, and the rest of the laptop too. I'm using it as a file server, so I don't need the keyboard much. So very pleased, and also pleased with reboot-it's service - as always, excellent, and quick responses to any queries.
