Performance in Use

The IP480G is the workhorse handset of the ShoreTel range — the phone that went on most desks in an office running that platform. Eight programmable line keys, a clear backlit display and a good speakerphone cover the great majority of business calling needs without stepping up to the size and cost of a reception console.

The Gigabit distinction is worth understanding before you buy. The standard IP480 passes network traffic through to an attached PC at 100Mbps; the IP480G does it at full Gigabit. Where a desk has a single network outlet and the computer connects through the phone — which is the normal arrangement — that is the difference between a PC running at full network speed and one artificially capped. On any current network, specify the G.

Note that ShoreTel was acquired by Mitel, and these handsets are supported on Mitel Connect as well as legacy ShoreTel systems. That makes refurbished units a sensible way to add desks or replace failed handsets on either platform without changing the user experience your staff already know. What this is not is a generic SIP phone: it expects ShoreTel or Mitel Connect call control. What is the difference between the IP480 and the IP480G?

The G denotes Gigabit Ethernet. The standard IP480 passes traffic to an attached PC at 100Mbps; the IP480G does so at full Gigabit speed. If a computer connects to the network through the phone, the G version avoids capping that computer's connection.

Does it need a power adapter?
